У статті аналізується оцінка постаті Т. Шевченка, зроблена Б. Грінченком у листах та шевченкознавчих розвідках. Б. Грінченко виступив проти спроб "побороти новонароджений культ" Кобзаря, продовживши започатковану українськими інтелектуалами традицію трактування образу Шевченка "як феноменального, може єдиного на світі з'явища у справі національного відродження свого краю". За його переконанням, така інтерпретація історичної ролі (місії) Т. Шевченка мала сприяти консолідації народжуваної модерної української нації
The article analyzes the estimation of T. Shevchenko's figure made by B. Grinchenko in his letters and research works. B. Hrinchenko opposed the attempts to "overcome of the newborn cult" of the Kobzar's by continuing a tradition of interpretation of the Shevchenko's image "as phenomenal, maybe the only one in the world phenomena in the case of national revival of his land" initiated by Ukrainian intellectuals. According to this belief, such interpretation of the historical role (mission) of T. Shevchenko had to promote consolidation of the emerging modern Ukrainian nation.
