Political processes of the 20th century initiated not only geopolitical change, but also seriously transformed the humanitarian component of the society. Thus, due to the spread of Soviet ideological campaign, science of history radically changed. This led to such outcome that many historians on account of their confrontation with the regime had to emigrate out of the Soviet Union and there to continue their scientific career. To these activities of Ukrainian scientific emigration current article is devoted. The article highlights one of the pressing problems of national history - the position of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC) during the time of powerful social and political changes that occurred in the Ukrainian lands as a result of the Second World War. By analyzing the church factor in the national state building processes of the 20th century we are faced with imbalanced views on its relevance in different social realities. Mostly this was due to the monopolization of religious and spiritual life during the first occupation of Western Ukraine by Soviet troops and the establishment of control over the church during the German occupation of the USSR. Under the influence of such political forces was one of the largest national religious denominations - Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. The purpose of this publication is to highlight the situation of UGCC in the situation of fundamental political change in Western Ukraine during the first half of the Second World War. Given that in Soviet historical literature this issue was not provided with objective research attention, author concentrated on the analysis of scientific papers by Ukrainian emigration, which had been the first to write about the situation of the Greek Catholic Church in the USSR during 1939-1942. Through the analysis of a wide range of events, on which the author emphasizes, he derives certain conclusions. In particular, it is stated that the result of the first wave of persecution against the UGCC, which was organized by the USSR during 1939-1941, had two components: a person was forbidden to have the right to religious self-determination and banned to belong to the Church, to which she was connected through historical memory and tradition. Also in 1941 the German occupation regime, in fact, continued previous tactics of "relations" between politics and the church. In general, it is acknowledged that Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church having powerful intellectual and material potential had been faced with the threat of total destruction, legalization of which began later.
