Стаття присвячена визначенню ролі відомого українського архівіста В. Міяковського у процесi заснування та функціонування Музею-архіву Української вільної академії наук у Нью-Йорку, який продовжив традиції Музею визвольної боротьби України у Празі. Розкрито внесок ученого у збирання та збереження української історичної та культурної спадщини за кордоном, комплектування архівної, книжкової та музейної колекцій Музею-архіву УВАН. Відзначено, що важливе місце в діяльності В. Міяковського займало дослідження біографії і творчої спадщини Т. Шевченка. Охарактеризовано заходи вченого щодо заснування та розгортання діяльності Інституту шевченкознавства Української вільної академії наук, організації шевченкознавчих конференцій, видання щорічників "Шевченко" у 1953-1964 рр., в яких
публікувались вагомі дослідження життя та творчості Кобзаря. Визначено ініціативи В. Міяковського щодо вивчення та видання зібраних у Музеї-архіві УВАН документів та передачі частини фондів до вільної України.
The article is devoted to defining of the role of famous Ukrainian archivist V. Miyakovskyi in the process of foundation and functioning of the Museum-Archive of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences in New York, which continued the tradition of the Museum of the Liberation Struggle of Ukraine in Prague. The scientist's contribution to collection and safekeeping of Ukrainian historical and cultural heritage abroad, acquisition of archives, books and museum collections of the Museum-Archive UVAN was shown. It was noted that the study of the Taras Shevchenko's biography and artistic heritage is important in V. Miyakovskyi activities. Were defined described the scientist's steps for the establishment and deployment of activities of Shevchenko Studies Institute of the Ukrainian Free Academy of Sciences, the organization of Shevchenko studies conferences, publication of yearbooks "Shevchenko" in 1953-1964 years, in which were published the valuable study about Kobzar's life and creative work. The initiatives of V. Miyakovsky on studying and publishing of the documents collected in the Museum-archive UVAN, and on transfer part of fund for independent Ukraine were defined.
