The National Standards for Physical Education provide the criteria for designing learning experiences in physical education. The National Teaching Standards for Physical Education2 provide the criteria for accomplished teachers of physical education. The Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health and subsequent reports on childhood obesity and inactivity and on increasing health risks among children provide the strongest base to date in support of quality physical education. We have the evidence to support physical education for children; we have the standards, both content and teaching, to provide the models for quality. Our task as teachers of physical education is to design learning experiences for children that assist them in developing a broad base of movement skills coupled with an enjoyment of physical activity that will translate into physically active, healthy lifestyles after they leave the gymnasiums of our elementary schools. The lesson plans in On the Move are designed with those two purposes in mind.
