This bachelor’s thesis is devoted to a comprehensive analysis of the development of curatorial strategies and models of public and private management of the Ukrainian National Pavilion at the Venice Biennale from 2001 to 2026. The aim of the study is to highlight the evolution of curatorial and management practices at the Ukrainian Pavilion from its first to its current participation; to substantiate their role in shaping the image of Ukraine and Ukrainian art in the international cultural and political sphere; and to examine the specific communication challenges of Ukraine’s participation and strategies for overcoming them.
The study analyzes the formation of curatorial practices in the Ukrainian context and in the creation of the National Pavilion at the Biennale. It reveals the institutional features of the Venice Biennale’s operation; systematizes Ukraine’s experience of participation in the first Biennales (2001–2013); and examines the organizational features of exhibition project management by private institutions. The article highlights the shift in curatorial decisions toward a decolonial discourse during 2014–2021 and the evolution of the state’s financial and organizational involvement. Particular attention is paid to examining the specifics of management and new curatorial strategies of the National Pavilion amid the full-scale war of 2022–2026, overcoming crisis situations, and continuing to develop communication between state structures and the pavilion teams. It has been demonstrated that during this period, the pavilion became a strategic platform for employing “soft power” mechanisms to articulate political challenges and demonstrate the nation’s cultural resilience, with the active involvement of relevant ministries.
The practical significance of the findings stems from the potential to apply the research materials in educational and curatorial practices, the development of educational courses at higher education institutions, and the formulation of methodological guidelines for institutions in the preparation of future international projects.
