The study is devoted to the phenomenon of “permitted art” in Ukraine during the 1970s–1980s, a phenomenon that emerged at the intersection of official Soviet culture and unofficial artistic practices. The purpose of the research is to identify the regional specificities of artistic processes in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Dnipro, to analyze the creative strategies employed by artists under conditions of ideological control, and to interpret art as a space of hidden dialogue between the artist and the Soviet system. The period of “stagnation” was characterized by the dominance of Socialist Realism, which determined the acceptable themes and forms of artistic expression. At the same time, artists employed symbolism, metaphorical imagery, and technical experimentation to create an alternative artistic language while formally remaining within the boundaries of approved aesthetics. This duality defined the essence of “permitted art” as an intermediate form between the official canon and nonconformist art. The analysis of regional artistic centers demonstrated that each developed its own distinctive model of artistic practice. Kyiv was represented by monumental art and conceptual explorations of Ada Rybachuk, Volodymyr Melnychenko, Florian Yuriev, and Valerii Lamakh. The Kharkiv School of Photography, particularly the “Vremya” (“Time”) group with Borys Mykhailov, Yevhen Pavlov, and Yurii Rupin, transformed photography into a tool of critical experimentation. Lviv stood out due to the influence of the hippie subculture and the activities of the “Tower” photographic group. In Odesa, a form of conceptualism characterized by irony and absurdity emerged, with Vojtsekhov as one of its central figures. Dnipro combined the academic sculpture of Nebozhenko and Kutsenko with the authorial photographic tradition of the “Dnipro” photo club. The research demonstrates that the regional diversity of artistic processes became an important prerequisite for the development of contemporary Ukrainian art. en_US
