This article analyzes fonts designed by an outstanding Ukrainian artist and public figure, one of the founders of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and its first Rector – Heorhiy Narbut.
The publication contains a morphological analysis of author’s fonts, created
in the last years of the life of the artist, when his original talent reached its
highest peak. These fonts have become a new phenomenon in the independent
Ukraine’s art and in the font graphics of the first half of the twentieth century.
Their graphical image influences the development of Ukrainian art of fonts up to this day, but in the art critics’s studies it often remains in the shadow of the artist’s masterful graphic compositions.It is known that most of the existing Cyrillic fonts are adaptations of wellknown European sets. There are very few qualitative native typefaces and they
appear quite rarely, therefore we consider it necessary to turn to the origins of native font creation, which was rapidly developing in the early twentieth century, absorbing the rich experience of Kievan Rus ancient manuscripts, as well as boldly embodying the latest trends in the visual art of the early twentieth century.
It should be noted that there is a lack of theoretical basis for the development of
native fonts in Ukraine, therefore we believe that exploring Heorhiy Narbut’s experience
in the area of creating original Cyrillic fonts will be useful in working on the creation
of the new Cyrillic fonts.The proposed article is the embodiment of author’s program
of studies of the sources of origin and modern transformation of Cyrillic handwritings
and manuscripts into fonts. It also presents morphological analysis of Narbut’s font
edition, implemented for the first time, and also highlights the influence of the
work of an outstanding artist on the further development of the font art in Ukraine
