Volodymyr Yurchyshyn’s letters are a rare combination of
historical font heritage and author’s handwriting. In this article the form-forming
principles in the font compositions V. Yurchyshyn are analyzed. Investigated
elements that perform a unifying function in the design of font graphs. The
characteristic manner of Yurchishin’s inscriptions is shown, which demonstrates
the ability to subordinate screensavers, colonoscopes, visualization and
illustrations to a single plan.
The specificity of the artist’s work is to reasonably combine his own stylistics,
attitude and accessibility, and the clarity of the text for the reader. Rhythmic
system of inscriptions it is complex and multifaceted. The design of the artist’s
font is the result of a personal rethinking of the handwritten Ustav and HalfUstav, first prints and cursive. Armed with art taste and, we can say, the genetic
senses of national aesthetics, Yurchyshyn synthesizes modern Peter the great’s
alphabet with historical handwriting, integrating old rusian letters into it.
By creating font compositions for covers, titles and rubrics, the artist always
performed a single stroke of the pen, without specifying or correcting the
inscription for the original print. This achieves a sense of the presence of the artist’s hand, which gives expression and emotionality, reveals the nature of
the publication. This way of creating a typographic design of the book allows
you to organically combine the features of the Ustav and cursive in the whole
composition in it and organically enter the text in refined weave ornamental lines.
The manner of writing and layout of fonts V. Yurchyshyn is recognizable
and brilliantly personal due to author innovations and constant techniques.
These include changes in the writing of individual letters, combining modern
classical graphs with historical elements and their own handwriting features.
Compositional schemes have inherent tension and expression, as well as
rhythmic, borrowed from artifacts of folk art. Creative techniques V. Yurchyshyn
is a precedent in Ukrainian font design and is extremely important for the further
development of the font.
