Abstract:
The task of paper forming is basic for the course of «The
theory of forming» – the propaedeutic discipline of the Design Department
of the National Academy of Fines Arts and Architecture. The requirements on
such practical assignments are envisaged by the specialty of the Department
of Design and by the peculiarities of professional activity. Graphic Design
has somehow different demands and methods of professional development,
and these peculiarities should be properly analyzed at first as well as basic
assignments should be methodically organized.
The scope of usage of paper in Graphic design is very wide; it’s used
during the basic education in propaedeutic courses as well as in students’
projects of upper courses. In contrary to the other types of design the paper
itself in graphic design is for outline design project. It is important that the
graphic designers are directly dealing with the paper material in their
professional activity. So, among the main priorities of the paper forming
course should be not only the skills of plastic development of 3-d forms
and composed construction but also the creation of new forms and forming
systems according to the properties of the material.
In the framework of the discipline there are lectures, individual work with
the students for the discussion of chosen by them ideas and the ways of
the project realization, as well as independent work of the students for the
practical part of the assignment.
At the beginning the students are faced with the high quality patterns of
paper, its features and technical peculiarities of work with it on the basis of
theoretical material and practical tasks.
The next assignments based on the basic geometrical forms are called
to ensure the usage of material and modeling thinking, understanding
of functional and esthetic fundamentals of the project and unity of the
function and construction. Students, by independently making complicated three-dimensional composition, are studying the principles of space
transformation of given area and structuring of independent elements of
form. The important task for future graphic designers is to make a series of
objects on the basis of the one forming paradigm, which is foundation for
the packaging as a professional activity.
The independent development by the student of schemes and forming
principles is provided by the practical work itself at all the stages. The
method is absolutely excepting the reproduction of borrowed patterns.
